Just a quick thought... instead of having the current resolution mechanism, could Polymarket not implement something like: if a market stays at 99.9% (or something close to 1) for more than X time, it resolves to Yes? If after a given time, the market hasn't resolved to Yes or No, it resolves to the last state it was in (e.g. 72-28). Wouldn't that be the best decentralized authority? Would that be susceptible to manipulation? If so, would it be worse than the current system?

Well, they had some choice. They voted for a Biden-Harris ticket in 2020 and in the 2024 primary. While it's not automatic that a VP would take over the top slot when vacated, I think there is a sense that that's the role of the VP ... to step in should the POTUS candidate withdraw. The general principle is that in order to be in power people need to want you there, and like showing up to a party you weren't invited to, taking presidency without approval backfires for the swing voters who aren't sure yet.
