it doesn't matter if they join NATO or not, the point is they now hate Russia and will be allied with NATO forever. In case of NATO-Russia war, all of NATO will march through northern Ukraine to Moscow. Their goal was to capture north and they failed, and capturing land in the east was their way to save face and present this war as a win instead of failure
