then why didn't Russia capture north Ukraine instead of east? Its the northern border of Ukraine that is closest to Moscow and from where a hypothetical invasion of NATO would come through

Ukraine holds less than 0.5% of Russian land mass. Russia has taken 18-20% of the land Ukraine owned. The east is now Russian, forever. How do you negotiate for land swaps when you hold nothing of value? Ukraine are acting delusional, good luck getting Crimea back.
