Look at the length of Obama's speeches in front of national audiences over the years. The dude likes to hear himself talk for longer and longer with every passing year

This is a pretty misleading way of wording things! In 2008 and 2012 he was...the nominee. The nominee always gives a long speech. In 2016, he was the sitting president. And in 2020, as you noted, he didn't speak in front of a crowd. 2024 is our first experience of what a post-presidency Obama convention speech looks like. A good model to look at would be Bill Clinton. In 2000 (his version of Obama's 2016) his speech was 48 minutes. In 2004 and 2008, his speeches were 22 and 25 minutes long.
